Back to the Start

There was a time when candies and crayons
would suffice
as you grow up you realize
there's a whole lot of things
you will have to sacrifice

Open your drawer
and take out that passport-size  photograph from 1997
remember that day your mom combed your hair into a neat ponytail
and told you tales about heaven?

Look at that girl with the grin on her face
she's only four
little things make her happy
she keep desiring more

Open your eyes
and find your reflection staring back
stop trying to identity those million shades of grey
it's always either white or black.

Open your mind
and place your palm on your heart
can you hear the reality of your life beating inside you?
Be the girl with the grin on her face, take yourself back to the start.

The Evils of Untouchability Start From Home  I've always loved kids and believed that children are the manifestation of God and innocence. But a few weeks ago, an interaction I had a with a four year-old child and her mothereally angered and disturbed me. I was talking to this little angel of a child and we were at a wedding and you're bound to find at lea st 4-5 children hopping around on the dance floor at a typical Indian wedding. I thought it was really cute and watching them have so much fun delighted me. A little while later, I saw this other little girl standing all by herself in the corner. She was really shy and timid and I tried to take her to the place where the other kids were so she could enjoy herself too. As soon as I reached there with her, the cute angel looking 4 year old hit her and said "Nahi, koi isse baat mat karo. Yeh Laxmi ki beti hai, aur yeh kaali aur stinky hai." (Laxmi being her care taker/ domestic help). When I told her moth...

Everything I Now Am

I am now a bundle a bundle of empty goodbyes and unused condoms I am remnants of lovers who didn't kiss me goodbye I am now the songs I didn't sing for the ones who pleaded me I am now the tears that hide under my pillows till the alarm clock screams I am the the calls I never returned and the flights I took to all the cities to save a love from drowning in alcohol I am the cheesecakes I baked to win back the love I lost to insecurity through the stomachs of his friends I am the lies I lied to the last page of my notebooks all because my heart couldn't decide which part of my body needed more blood. I am them all, I am all my mistakes, I am a bundle a bundle waiting to be undone and re-distributed to those who should've loved me better.

About Kissing

As the air from my nose divides itself from the tip of yours, skims down your cheekbones, And my gasps vanish in between the gaps in your teeth I recount, while you push your face into mine and scavenge for magic in my mouth, how our lips locked so well yesterday and how today, as you wave my tongue like it was manufactured only for your consumption, your appetite bobs off my face like a ball of oil trying to dive in water. I wonder if it were my lips t hat changed their shape or your intentions, your tantrums or my apprehensions? I wonder if you realize that the lump in your throat is the lie I'm choking on, and that my lips don't belong to you just because you have touched them with yours before.
